“One day in the summer of this year, at Savarsin, speaking about the wonderful park and castle, as they looked in 1943, handed down by the Queen Mother Elena, Princess Margaret and myself realised that in November it would be twenty-five years since the death of her grandmother. If I were to find a quick definition, without lingering to think overly much, I would say about the Queen Mother of Romania that she was a woman of great beauty, both spiritual and physical, a queen of innate grace. Thus, the most fitting homage that I might offer her today is a book in her image. I have gathered in these pages portraits, as though they had been painted famous artists such as Grigorescu or Laszlo. I thought of a book that would paint a portrait of what is hard to express in words.”
