This superb album of colour photographs was published in 2006, the year that marked the anniversary of four key events connected to royalty: the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Romanian royal dynasty (the elevation of Prince Carol I to the throne on 10 May 1866), the 125th anniversary of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania (10 May 1881), the 100th anniversary of the Romanian National Exhibition (6 June 1906), and the eighty-fifth birthday of King Mihai I (25 October 2006).
With a Preface by H.R.H. Princess Margareta, the album includes a comprehensive presentation, in text and pictures of the Elisabeta Palace, the state residence of the Royal Family today. The author considers the palace designed in the 1930s by architect Marcu not only as a harmonious architectural monument but also as a place laden with symbols of past and present. Throughout the “guided tour” of the palace that he offers readers of the book, H.R.H. Prince Radu evokes members of the Royal Family in days gone by, from King Carol I to the Queen Mother Elena, as well as presenting members of the family today and their projects. The Elisabeta Palace, reckons the author, has become the centre of royalty in Romania today, and its role will be ever more important in years to come.
